Recently, I have noticed that when my 2 year old son does something successfully he turns to us and screams “I did it!” with his hands raised in the air.  It fun to see his excitement. I think we all need to recognize our accomplishments in life, no matter how big or small.

Last week, I ran 1 mile. I did it! 1 mile. It was my first mile in almost 3 months.  Oh, how I have missed running. I took it super easy for fear of the “strain” to come back to my outer knee.

Something that I recommend for everybody who is interested in running, is proper running techniques. Last week, before my 1 mile run, I had a friend that is an avid runner teach me more about proper running techniques.  Avoiding heel striking, posture, arms, cadence, etc. It was a great lesson.  He works at Runner’s Corner in Orem, UT. He filmed me “before” and “after”. Let’s just say there is a big difference.  It works different muscles and it feels like I am starting from scratch when running.

Is it worth it?  Yes. My friend and I think that my heel striking was a big factor in my knee injury.

What do I do now? Wait it out I guess.

I asked a friend who just finished physicians assistant school what the injection entails. He recommends it according to what I am feeling and experiencing. He said it is a pretty potent steroid and I should feel relief within a few days or weeks.

So I guess physical therapy is out for now. I will wait a few more weeks while I ice and rest my knee. I do recommend the r.i.c.e. treatment. It will help you. Lots of massaging that focuses on the area that hurts will also help.

Am I getting anxious to run? Yes. Am I learning patience? Yes. Will I run again. You bet I will. Next up is to run a mile or two without pain.

Have you ever noticed that when you run you always have a goal? If not, you should. Always be pushing yourself.

MRI

Well, I had the MRI this morning.  It was quite the experience. That machine is huge and I am definitely glad I didn’t have to stick my head in there. The part that was not fun was that I was told to be completely still. I find that difficult, but even more difficult when you start to get that “itch”. It was on my leg, but couldn’t do anything about it for 10 minutes. crazy. It was hard to distract myself from the “pain” of the itch.

I didn’t get instant results telling me why my knee has been hurting, but they will come in the next couple of days. I really really hope that we get answers to figure out where the pain is coming from and figure out why a month of physical therapy didn’t help.

I have been to physical therapy 4 times now. What I originally thought to be an IT band problem might be more than just soft tissue damage. My ability to run even short distances is on hold.

I will try and get scheduled for an MRI soon. I am sad because I thought doing physical therapy would heal me. Nope.

I am saddened because every time I see a runner I wish it was me. There was a half marathon today and I couldn’t run it.

My sister ran the Little Grand Canyon Marathon on Saturday. I was pleased to take Kyden to Emery county to watch and support her on the big day.

I was able to see her start and see the excitement/nervousness of the runners.  It really made me wish that I was running that day. I had really hoped to be there with Emily, step by step. The training I received that day was to build up the excitement while I wait for my knee to heal (still in physical therapy). I also felt happy to be there and cheer her on.

On the way to the finish line we passed a few runners here and there and even a few cars coming away from the race.  Here is one of the “wash” areas where flood water can drain without ruining the road. As we were racing down to see Emily, I was super nervous we were going to miss her crossing the line. At 8 miles left I was zooming and splashed through this one. Coming opposite direction was a buick and yes, they got splashed. It was not until after they passed that my sister Liz said… “there windows are down! both of them!” Yep, we splashed them with muddy water. they were drenched and according to my parents (in the vehicle behind us), the driver and passengers in the back were drenched with muddy water. Needless to say, we laughed for an extended period of time.gully

I would like to clarify that these people are not your stereotypical runners. As the race was ending (fast forward a few hours) I realized that these people were finishing the marathon in 4 hours and above. Some probably came in at 6 hours (when we were leaving there were two ladies that were finishing the race with the motto complete not compete). It gave me hope that even I could do it. I even saw a guy from Tokyo that was stopping to enjoy the scenery. Just a reminder that we take for granted our beautiful scenic mountains/red rock. We do live in a beautiful state.  I really feel that this will be the marathon I run next year. There was even a guy that has supposedly run 770 marathons. that is awesome. Here is his photo. We found emily with about 6 miles to go. We were so proud of her as she was making a great pace.  We shouted our cheers and moved on. We stopped at a spot with about 2 miles to go.  I quickly changed and waited for her. I figured my knee could hold out for 2 miles.  The pain started back up in my knee two blocks in and a half mile later another pain behind my knee started.  But no stress, I just thought of how much pain Emily might be in and it was more important for me to be there to support her. Not sure if she liked it, but I chatted about random things to help take her mind off of it.  The desert heat was almost too much.

As we got closer we pealed away from Emily so she could cross on her own. She did it!

So proud of her and I can’t wait for my chance to run in a Marathon. Yes, I want to run a Marathon. I had asthma growing up as a child, but I overcame it. I have a knee injury, but it will heal. I will run in a marathon next year.

I began physical therapy this past week. Training for a marathon is taxing on my body. I have been to the Dr. twice and it is either a strain or tendonitis.

I would rather see a physical therapist than a physician. I feel like the physician only wants to see you for 2 minutes then it is on to the next patient. It seems to be about money for them not helping you as a person.

My treatment began at the physical therapist and I was there for two hours. Awesome. I am getting the attention and advice to get my knee healed. Lots of stretching and massaging and icing.

I have strains in two places the IT band and hamstring. I believe it is called iliotibial band syndrome or runners knee which comes from overuse when adding miles.  My guess is that I was not stretching properly before/after my runs.

I have also been told to ice the lateral side (left leg) of my leg, behind the knee and just below the knee on the soleus muscle

Marathon

My to do list for today was “marathon sign-up”. That is not happening anymore.

I am disappointed. I am only 28 and have knee problems. Okay people younger than me have problems. What frustrates me is that I have trained for so long. Two weeks away and I can’t run the marathon.

I am also letting my sister down. I promised her I would run with her. I have no doubt she will do well, I just hate the thought of not fulfilling a promise I made to someone.

I feel healthy and am gratefulful for that. I also have enjoyed training with my sister. We have grown a lot closer.

We also just completed a relay and it was a blast. 6 member team and 60 miles. Can’t wait to heal up and get running again.
